The site, reborn

It was a ten years ago today…

Well no, not really. More like nine years actually. And not today.

(Start again.)

It was November 9, 2000, when I originally reserved this domain, long before MTV’s Total Request Live

Okay, fine… it was sometime after MTV’s TRL, not that I’d actually heard of it at the time. All I wanted was a personal site, and using my initials seemed the way to go.

From then to now, this domain has endured a number of redesigns and re-uses: from the gaudy, black and purple personal shrine of the single, university-aged me (which pre-dates the domain itself); to the rather more politically minded beginning-to-“blog” me; to the slightly more understated, apolitical married family-man homeowner me.

All of this was accomplished with various flavours of HTML, despite the fact that I developed Content Management Administration skills as far back as 2003 and blogs not long after. Anyway, with a new year arriving, it occurred to me that now would be a good time to reboot the domain once again.  At first I considered a CMS — Drupal — one of the best I’ve found. It was good enough for the President of the United States, so I was confident it would meet my significantly less critical needs.

That said, using Drupal for a personal site is a bit like using a Ferrari to commute to the corner store for a litre of milk, so in the end I decided to keep an installation of it handy for interest and to re-familiarize myself with CMS as it exists today, but to use a blog platform for the site.

I also have extensive experience with MediaWiki and briefly considered it as well, but it’s really already created it’s niche, and it isn’t as the software for Mom and Pop websites.

So… onward with WordPress.  Truly great open source software.
