So you want to be a musician…

If you want to be a musician, be prepared to spend most of your time, at least initially, playing with yourself…

Start a daily routine. Lock yourself alone in your bedroom (or even the bathroom). Take out your equipment. Always treat it with care. Remember, you want it to last a lifetime.

Start out slowly, then increase your speed. Once you have a comfortable pace, just play with it for hours and hours until you are too sore to continue.  I wish I had some helpful advice in this area, but tired hands and calloused fingers are just a fact of life if this is how you want to spend your free time.

After a few years, you might be good enough to start doing it in public. Doing it in front of a large crowd too soon is probably a bad idea. To reduce performance anxiety, I’d recommend doing it in front of friends, and eventually work up to larger crowds.

Remember that outdoor and unlicensed public performances of this nature are illegal in some places. Playing is fun, but not worth getting arrested for.
