Americans are a strange breed. Paradoxical. I’m quite amused as I watch the growing fervour on television concerning the race for the Democratic Presidential candidacy, and the inevitable “Dubyah vs. Someone” race for the White House. Where’s the excitement? For a nation that would riot in the streets if it was forced to endure the hardship of only a few of varieties of diet soda, how can it be satisfied with only two major political parties?
Would the Indianapolis 500 garner so much attention if the competition was lowered to two drivers — especially if one drove a Pontiac and the other drove a Chervolet (both GM products)? Let me explain.
Once upon a time (before the 1980’s) the Democrats were the Left and the Conservatives were just Right of centre. Then came the Neo-Conservatives (later replaced by the Cultural Conservatives) and the entire system took a huge step to the Right — Democrats included. Now Democrats are practically what Conservatives used to be, and Conservatives… well, that’s why the phrase “right wing lunatic” exists today. They really are way out there, folks. Most of the looniest have a daytime AM talk show.
For those of you who insist on labouring under your delusion of choice — happy balloting. Just remember that at the end of the day, we’re all happy Republicans or republicans respectively.
